Mark Lowry, the Christian comedian, wrote the lyrics to the song, “Mary Did You Know?” in the 1980s. This song really touches my heart, especially at Christmas time when we spend more time pondering the birth of Jesus, our Savior.
As you read this song’s lyrics below, try putting yourself in Mary’s position:
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb.
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I am.
How beautiful these words are! How Mary must have been filled with awe and wonder!
When babies are born, we look at them and see how perfect they are. Mary’s baby boy was, and is, the Perfect One. What was she feeling while she was cradling the Savior of the world in her arms? She was given the great responsibility to raise and nurture the Son of God. However, she was also blessed with the privilege of being Jesus’ mother while He walked in this world.
It is overwhelming to me to think about how Jesus came to live amongst us, not only to die for our sins but also to show us how to live while on this earth. Think about it: He left all the glory of heaven to live as a helpless human baby to dwell in an imperfect world amongst imperfect people, all because of how much He loved us and wanted to draw each one of us unto Himself. Wow. That’s all I can say sometimes, wow.

So, throughout this new year, remember what Jesus’ birth really means to all people.
“But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.” Luke 2: 19-20, NAS
